Ex-FIFA official Diakite appeals corruption ban

Former FIFA executive committee member Amadou Diakite is giving evidence at the Court of Arbitration for Sport to overturn his two-year ban for corruption in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests.
The court said Wednesday that Diakite has appealed to annul his sanction, which expires next October. A verdict is expected within weeks.
FIFA’s ethics panel found the Mali official guilty of advising British undercover reporters how to bribe FIFA voters.
The Sunday Times later told British lawmakers that Diakite claimed Qatar’s 2022 bid offered $1 million payments to African football leaders.
Diakite lost his seat on FIFA’s referees committee. Six serving and former FIFA executive committee members were suspended in the scandal.
